![]() ![]() The first three of those landmark films are collected in this box set.Īlthough Teshigahara, as director, was responsible for organizing and unifying these collaborations, it is otherwise difficult to distinguish absolutely the separate contributions of each of the three artists. ![]() Their four films- Pitfall (1962), Woman in the Dunes (1964), The Face of Another (1966), and Man Without a Map (1968)-set Japan center stage in the intellectual discourse of a world seeking answers to questions about identity, human existence, and the alienation of modern man in urban society. ![]() Through work intended principally for Japanese audiences, the three struck a chord that harmonized unexpectedly, but perfectly, with the sensibilities and existentialist instincts of the international avant-garde. In the mid-1960s, these three artists came together in a series of extraordinary film collaborations that shocked their more conventional countrymen and instantly won enthusiastic response abroad. Individually, they transformed every area of artistic endeavor they turned to, and they are among the small handful of Japanese writers and artists who have had a significant, lasting impact on international culture. Each in his own right was an artist of peculiar genius, each resisting easy classification in conventional categories: Teshigahara as filmmaker, designer, flower artist, potter, calligrapher Takemitsu as composer, poet, musical theorist, philosopher and Abe as novelist, playwright, director, theater innovator. He was elected a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1977.The names Hiroshi Teshigahara, Kobo Abe, and Toru Takemitsu loom large among Japanese intellectuals of the late twentieth century. In 1973, he founded an acting studio in Tokyo, where he trained performers and directed plays. In the 1960s, he collaborated with Japanese director Hiroshi Teshigahara in the film adaptations of The Pitfall, Woman in the Dunes, The Face of Another and The Ruined Map. Though he did much work as an avant-garde novelist and playwright, it was not until the publication of The Woman in the Dunes in 1962 that he won widespread international acclaim. He was first published as a poet in 1947 with Mumei shishu ("Poems of an unknown poet") and as a novelist the following year with Owarishi michi no shirube ni ("The Road Sign at the End of the Street"), which established his reputation. He never practised however, giving it up to join a literary group that aimed to apply surrealist techniques to Marxist ideology.Ībe has been often compared to Franz Kafka and Alberto Moravia for his surreal, often nightmarish explorations of individuals in contemporary society and his modernist sensibilities. ![]() I thought Tyler Cowan (with whom I often don’t agree) did an excellent job of defining what we do know about AI and then what questions to ask. I thought this was the most edifying of the econtalk episdoes on AI – not because it had the answers but because it had the questions. As our tools grow ever more powerful, that hubris grows ever more dangerous. It’s the kind of arrogance that Aeschylus wrote about at the dawn of civilization, the hubris that has caused so much suffering over the millennia. I suspect that, in such a world of pampered welfare and lack of any sort of meaningful work, most people will simply slip into insanity.Ĭowen’s lack of imagination is startling, but what really worries me is his feeling of casual superiority. ![]() I doubt that the machines will “come for us.” What concerns me is a world in which a human has no function, no vocation. The last vocations to be rendered unnecessary will probably be jobs like auto repair that require a wide range of practical knowledge along with the ability to manipulate tools in physically demanding situations, but even they will yield, all too soon, to the economics, robotics, and superior analytical abilities of advanced AI. At the current rate of AI development, I strongly suspect that their services will no longer be required in these fields or in most others. They seem to believe that their particular vocations as educators and writers will remain untouched by these developments. Roberts and Cowen both speak casually about people having to adapt to a world with ChatBot or even AGI. And, how like an economist- the way we should debate this is with competing “models.”ĭr. Cowen sneers at this model, while offering nothing different. Has he developed a model? If he were present when Gutenberg produced the first printed page, could he have produced a predictive model of any utility at all? The model concerned people are offering is in the rhetoric they produce, both written and oral. ![]() I’m deeply concerned about the impact of AI, but Cowen is ready to dismiss my concerns out of hand, unless I develop a “model” of potential impact. The only other potentially similar line of technological development at the moment is gene editing, which has risks of a similar magnitude. Not even the splitting of the atom is comparable. Using the impact of the printing press as an analog to the potential impact of AI? Really?!!? The potential power and ubiquity of AI in this era are unparalleled- they are qualititatively different from any other breakthrough in human affairs. The fallacies in Cowen’s arguments are so overwhelming that it’s difficult to respond to them all. I think it’s hard to model something where reasonable people can disagree on whether it’s more like the invention of the printing press, or more like The Great Oxidation Event. So what’s the relevant historical model or data you could bring to bear on a model? I think Eliezer would say the most relevant historical event is the evolution of humans, but 1-10 million times faster. Taken together those two points make it seem like we are inventing the atomic bomb, but without understanding enough physics to know what detonates them off, or how big the explosions will be. (2) We are profoundly ignorant of how GAIs work, what makes it more or less of a threat, and how to control it if it is a threat. (1) General AI has a significant chance of being an existential threat to the human race. Here are 2 claims that I actually don’t think are too controversial – To be sympathetic to Team Eliezer here, I think there’s a relatively conservative version of his story that is still pretty scary. The fossils formed within the rocks as a result of mysterious forces.īut for Steno, the close resemblance between fossils and modern organisms was impossible to ignore.(This explanation could not account for the fact that fossils were not only found on mountains, but also within mountains, in rocks that had been quarried from deep below Earth’s surface.) The shells were washed up during the Biblical flood.Authors in that day thought that the fossils of marine animals found in tall mountains, miles from any ocean could be explained in one of two ways: Most people at the time did not believe that fossils were once part of living creatures. Steno was struck by the resemblance of the shark’s teeth to fossils found in inland mountains and hills ( Figure below).įossil Shark Tooth (left) and Modern Shark Tooth (right). In 1666, a young doctor named Nicholas Steno dissected the head of an enormous great white shark that had been caught by fisherman near Florence, Italy. If you find a fossil of a fish in a dry terrestrial environment did the fish flop around on land? Did the rock form in water and then move? Since fish do not flop around on land today, the explanation that adheres to the philosophy that natural laws do not change is that the rock moved. ![]() Geologists always use present-day processes to interpret the past. On “Friendship Train” she is an awesome, galvanizing force. ![]() But by late 1968 her transformation was complete. However, her belting is at times ill-focused and unsteady. In the early sixties, her low and middle registers are buttery warm and secure. I bet Bob Richardson would have liked to produce her songs!Ī listen to Gladys’ pre-Motown (and even some of the early Motown) recordings reveal that her craft had to evolve. Though the group felt they were not given the support they deserved at Motown, Gladys puts it like this, “We eventually got what we came for.” And that would be hit records, dates at the top venues and household recognition. In 1966 Gladys Knight and The Pips signed a contract with Motown Records. Brother Bubba (Merald Knight), Cousin Ed (Edward Patten) and Cousin Red (William Guest) became a spinning, dipping, quickstepping, harmony machine that was the envy of other acts on the “chitlin’ circuit.” The hits may have been in short supply but a razor-sharp live show kept the gigs coming. Working with vocal coach Maurice King and choreographer Cholly Atkins, the remaining quartet continued honing their skills. ![]() By 1965 cousin Eleanor and sister Brenda had dropped out of the group. Such are “the going ups and the coming downs” of the music business. Gladys was only sixteen-years-old but vocally she was all woman. ![]() The first taste of recording success was the #1 R&B single from 1961, “Every Beat Of My Heart”. Check also this post about Bill Lowery and Ray Charles. So they named themselves after their cousin and manager James “Pip” Woods. As for a name, “We thought of all kinds of flowers and things, but nothing seemed to catch everybody’s fancy,” Gladys has said. A singing group was formed a few years later comprised of Gladys, her brother, her sister and several cousins. Eight-year-old Gladys eventually won the $2,000 Grand Prize in 1952. Elizabeth Knight arranged to have her audition for the popular Ted Mack Original Amateur Hour TV program. At age four, Gladys was touring Atlanta, GA, as a soloist. She has said that her late mother Elizabeth felt that she had a gift. Like many soul-singers, Gladys began performing in a Baptist church. ![]() She fills those three syllables with more meaning than some vocalists put into whole songs. Just a few bars into her rendition of “I Will Survive” she delivers the line ‘I learned how…to get along’ and then draws spontaneous applause by simply intoning ‘Ooo-ooo-ooo’. What counts is the ability to make a listener feel something. As Gladys herself has noted, those aren’t the most important things. She’s not given to elaborate melisma embellishments or frequent falsetto flourishes. Gladys’ voice doesn’t scale the highest heights. Gladys’ answer to the question of her endurance was, “Well, I know somebody.” the implication, of course, was that her faith and relationship with God had brought her this mighty long way. In the annals of rock and soul music, she was one of a select few. So check out this tribute to a Soul Legend – Gladys Knight. Yet here she stood, so many decades later, still recording, still packing theaters year round and still sending folks home happy. Gladys was a middle-aged woman who cut her first record in 1958–when television was relatively new. In the mid-1990s, while touring to support her ‘Just For You’ CD, Gladys Knight would say to her audiences, “I know a lot of the young artists look at me and wonder, ‘What you still doin’ here?'”. ![]() For notebook computers in particular, make sure the computer is in the proper conditions to provide constant high performance (for example by keeping the AC power connected) when using Serato DJ Lite.
